Chapter 2 recounts Holden's good-natured visit to his History professor Mr. Spencer which turns sour when he starts to reprimand him.

Notes[]

  • Mr. Spencer has the "grippe", the old-fashioned term for flu.
  • Life is a game
  • Whooton School and Elkton Hills
  • Ducks in Central Park
  • Holden's exam about Egyptians
  • Good luck!

Analysis[]

When Holden shares to the reader the reason why he left his previous schools Whooton and Elkton Hills, he divulges that because he was "surrounded by phonies" and that the headmaster was a "bastard", echoing his earlier sentiments about Pencey.

Quotes[]

"Life is a game, boy. Life is a game that one plays according to the rules.""Yes, sir. I know it is. I know it." Game, my ass. Some game. If you get on the side where all the hot-shots are, then it's a game, all right—I'll admit that. But if you get on the other side, where there aren't any hot-shots, what's a game about it? Nothing. No game."
