Mr. Cudahy is Jane Gallagher's stepfather.

Background[]

Mr. Cudahy has a rather difficult relationship with his stepdaughter Jane. Though the specific details are not mentioned, Holden Caulfield, a close friend of Jane holds him in contempt as Holden has witnessed her cry once because of her stepfather.[1]

Together with Jane and her mother, they moved to Maine from Cape Cod, into the same neighborhood of Holden some years prior to the events of The Catcher in the Rye.

Description[]

Holden recalls that all he ever saw Mr. Cudahy do was "booze all the time and listen to every single goddam mystery program on the radio". He is described as a "skinny guy with hairy legs" who always walks around the house wearing nothing but shorts, even with Jane present.[2]
