Selma Thurmer is the daughter of Pencey's headmaster and one of the few girls who would attend football games at Pencey Preparatory School.

Description[]

Holden describes Selma as rather unattractive: she has a big nose, her nails are bitten down and bleedy-looking, and she wears falsies which "point all over the place".[1]

Holden says he sat next to Selma once on the school bus from Agerstown, and he struck up a conversation with her. He admits that he likes her as a person, especially because she doesn't brag and pretend like her father is a really great guy, in fact Holden seems to think that she probably thinks her dad is a "phony slob", as well.
